COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina held No. 16/19 Tennessee to its lowest scoring output in SEC play, but the Lady Vols (28-7, 9-3) pulled out a 3-1 victory in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday at Beckham Field.

Sophomore Lauren Lackey went 2-for-3 for the Gamecocks (10-25, 0-15 SEC). Raven Chavanne went 2-for-3 with a run scored to lead Tennessee’s offense.

A two-out, second-inning RBI double by Erinn Webb put Tennessee on top, 1-0. The Lady Vols added their second run in the third on Tiffany Huff’s single through the middle.

Junior April Borchardt put the Gamecocks on the board in the fourth. She led off the frame with a single, moved to second on a groundout, stole third and scored when the throw to third got away from the Lady Vol defense.

South Carolina got the tying run to third in the sixth with one out after back-to-back singles by juniors Laura Mendes and P.J. Fulmer, but Tennessee reliever Ivy Renfroe got two strikeouts to get out of the jam.

Tennessee added some insurance in the seventh when Lauren Gibson singled through the left side to score Kat Dotson, who led off the inning with a hit.

Borchardt (3-1) took the loss, allowing two earned runs on five hits and two walks in four innings. She struck out four. Cat Hosfield (11-4) picked up the win, tossing five innings, giving up one unearned run on four hits while fanning three. Ivy Renfroe picked up the save, striking out four and giving up two hits in two innings.
