LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky (24-16, 9-9 SEC) picked up a 4-3, come-from-behind victory over South Carolina (10-29, 0-18 SEC) to close out the doubleheader sweep on Saturday afternoon at UK Softball Complex.
Freshman Hannah Milks helped the Gamecocks come back to take a 3-1 lead in the top of the fifth. She knocked her second double of the year off the top of the left-field wall to score junior April Borchardt and senior Adele Voigt after their one-out hits. Milks later scored on a safety squeeze put down by sophomore Kandyce Redondo.
But Kentucky got it within one in the bottom of the frame with a two-out RBI by pitcher Rachel Riley, as pinch runner Macy Allen scored from second on a grounder fielded behind the second-base bag that the Gamecocks did not convert into an out. The Wildcats then took back control in the sixth. Natalie Smith singled home Alice O’Brien to tie the game, and Megan Yocke put down a the suicide squeeze bunt to plate Molly Johnson, who went 2-for-3 with two runs scored in the game.
The Big Blue got on the board in the third when Meagan Aull’s single ricocheted off Borchardt in the circle, allowing Johnson to score.
Riley (9-6) got the complete-game win, allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits while striking out seven. Junior Ashley Chastain (4-10) took the loss, giving up three earned runs in 1.2 innings of relief.
South Carolina and Kentucky close out the series on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. in front of a national TV audience on ESPNU.
