ATHENS, Ga. – South Carolina seniors Pedro Campos and Diego Cubas suffered a 6-4, 6-3 loss in the second round of the NCAA Doubles Championship Thursday afternoon at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga. The Gamecocks struggled with No. 18 Andrei Daescu and Costin Paval of Oklahoma early in the match, but fought hard to get back in the competition.

The first set got off to a difficult start for the nation’s 25th-ranked duo as Campos and Cubas fell behind 4-0 out of the gate. Campos held his second service game to get the Gamecocks on the board, and Cubas followed suit to get the set to 5-2. The Sooners’ top tandem was serving for the set, but Campos and Cubas battled for the service break to stay in the set. With one of the two breaks in hand, Campos held serve to get to 5-4. The OU team survived the second break attempt and closed out the set with a 6-4 victory.

In the second set, the teams held through the five service games, leaving the Gamecocks with a 3-2 lead. The Sooners found their stride in the next service game and rolled through the next four games for the 6-3 victory.

The loss in the final match of their Gamecock careers gives the Campos/Cubas duo a 9-6 record for the season, including a 7-4 mark against nationally-ranked opponents. Both men have etched their names into the Gamecock doubles record books. Campos’ 59 career doubles wins are 16th-best in program history, while Cubas’ .595 winning percentage (50-34) is the 20th-best by a Gamecock.
