COLUMBIA, S.C. – Senior Lakya Brookins from the Gamecock track and field team has been named AgSouth Athlete of the Week.

Brookins ran an NCAA Indoor Championships automatic qualifying time in her first race of the season to lead the women’s track & field team in the season opener at Virginia Tech. Brookins ran the 60-meter dash in 7.25 seconds, just one of two automatic qualifying marks in the nation for the national championships that will be held in March.

The 2009 NCAA Champion and 2010 NCAA bronze medalist ran faster than her 2010 season opening race, signaling a strong season ahead for the All-American. Also, Brookins won the race at the Virginia Tech Invitational for the second straight year. At the same meet last year, Brookins ran 7.28 to take the victory.
