COLUMBIA, S.C. – Lakya Brookins from the Gamecock women’s track and field team has been named AgSouth Athlete of the Week.
Brookins hit a 10-year old collegiate record to win the 60-meter dash national title at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
Brookins ran 7.09 to set four new records as her time ranks as the new collegiate record, South Carolina school record, NCAA Indoor Championship meet record and the Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium (Texas A&M) record. The mark also officially ends her collegiate indoor career with the title of “fastest woman in the world in 2011” as her time is the only sub-7.10 time run in 2011.
The NCAA title is the second in Brookins’ career, both coming in the 60-meter dash. She won the 2009 title at 7.13 before taking the 2011 title Saturday.
