COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina freshman high jumper Jeannelle Scheper will represent her country of St. Lucia Monday morning at the 40th edition of the Caribbean Junior Championships, known as the CARIFTA Games, being held at the Montego Bay Sports Complex at Catherine Hall Stadium in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Scheper will compete in the under-20 high jump competition Monday at 9:30 a.m.
Twenty-five Caribbean Island countries are taking part in the 2011 CARIFTA Games that spread over three days of the Easter weekend. Scheper is seeded No. 3 in the high jump behind two world-ranked Juniors from the host country of Jamaica. Scheper enters with a season best time of 5’8 ¾ (1.75m) that ranks her tied for 15th in the world for Junior athletes.
Last year in her first appearance at the 2010 CARIFTA Games held in George Town, Cayman Islands, Scheper was a bronze medalist for St. Lucia in the under-17 high jump division with a top mark of 5’6 (1.68m) at the meet. She has already qualified for the upcoming IAAF World Youth Championships that will be held July 6-10 in Lille, France. Scheper is the only St. Lucian athlete to qualify in any event for the World Youth Championships so far this year.
After returning from Jamaica, Scheper will rejoin the Gamecocks when they travel to the prestigious Penn Relays Carnival that is being held April 28-30 at Franklin Field in Philadelphia.
