CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Several members of the South Carolina men’s tennis team competed in both doubles and singles events at the ITA Carolinas Regional on Saturday.
Elon’s Cameron Silverman and Eric Turner advanced over South Carolina’s Andrew Adams and Nick Jones due to injury in the round of 16 in doubles action. South Carolina’s other doubles team in the round of 16, Carl Eguez and Ivan Machado, suffered an 8-6 loss in the round to Alain Humblet and Philip Kloc of Appalachian State.
In singles play, Jones earned a thrilling win over Esben Hess-Olsen of North Carolina in the round of 32. The Gamecock sophomore collected a 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(5) victory to advance to Sunday’s round of 16.
Also in singles play on Saturday, senior Ivan Machado earned a 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 win over Ahmet Sarioglu of UNC Greensboro, while sophomore Chip Cox suffered a 7-5, 6-4 loss to Chris Mengel of Duke, the tournament’s third seed and the 49th-ranked player in the country.
Clemson’s Yannick Maden advanced over Adams, again due to injury.
Jones will face Duke’s Henrique Cunha and Machado will face Adam Lee of Wake Forest in the round of 16 on Sunday with both matches set to start at 11 a.m.
