LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Senior Beatrice Biwott set a 6K PR of 21:19.5 to finish in 36th place at the 2011 NCAA Southeast Region Cross Country Championships on Saturday at E.P. `Tom’ Sawyer Park in Louisville, Ky. As a team, the Gamecocks wrapped up their season with a 24th-place finish out of 35 teams.

South Carolina finishes the year in the top half of the region, as 49 teams make up the Southeast Region.

Biwott’s finish is her career best at the event and is also the best by a Gamecock since former standout Jenny Lake finished 34th at the 2004 Region Championships.

Biwott set her 6K PR for the second straight meet, as her time of 21:31.56 at the SEC Championships two weeks ago was her previous best. She accomplished the PR against a field of 240 runners.

Senior Sara Hartley was the next Gamecock to cross the finish line in 122nd place with a time of 22:40.4, which is her 6K PR. Senior Nicole Rheinlander placed 153rd with a time of 23:06.6, while sophomore Scola Jepngetich (23:20.7), sophomore Penny Boswell (23:25.5) and junior Megan Rother (24:23.9) also competed for the Gamecocks on Saturday.

South Carolina entered the meet short-handed without two of its top five runners, as freshman Meredith Mill (illness) and sophomore Liz Locke (injury) were ruled out.

No. 21 Virginia claimed first with 107 points, followed by North Carolina State (113) and North Carolina (133).

North Carolina’s Kendra Schaaf recorded a time of 19:52.9 to take individual honors.
