Freshman Sabrina D’Angelo is one of 20 athletes competing for the Canadian U-20 Women’s National Team at the 2012 CONCACAF Championships in Panama City. Sabrina will provide a blog throughout Canada’s run in the World Cup qualifying tournament to provide Gamecock fans an inside look into her experience. After group play, Canada won Group A (Mexico, Jamaica, Haiti) with a perfect 3-0-0 record, led by D’Angelo’s three consecutive shutouts to become just the second goalkeeper in CONCACAF U-20 history to register shutouts in all three of her team’s group stage matches. The Canadians take on Panama this Friday (March 9) at 8 p.m. in the semifinals.

Hey Gamecock Fans!

We made it through the group stage and managed to come first in our group. The games were great, a 5-0 win against Haiti, a 2-0 win against Jamaica and then a tough 1-0 win against Mexico. The Mexico game was definitely my favourite. I love being tested and the pressure of having to win. Everyone was ready for this game, and you could see the energy in the change room. We knew we would be in for a battle from the beginning and fought the entire game. I was very pleased to come out of the group stage with no goals against. It was a team effort, and without my back four the games could have been much different.

We’re growing as a team and learning from the games in our group stage to help us prepare for Panama. The game on Friday is going to be huge. With a win it will automatically send us through to the World Cup in Japan, along with the finals against either the USA or Mexico. The stakes are high and we know Panama will come out and want to fight, especially with them playing in front of their fans. We have training later today and I’m excited to get back out there after a day off and see what coach has planned for us.
