COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina will host two volleyball tournaments during the 2012 fall season, Gamecock head coach Scott Swanson announced today, as he released the rest of the 2012 schedule.

Opening the season at home, South Carolina will hold the Gamecock Invitational presented by Courtyard Marriott on Aug. 24-25 at the Volleyball Competition Facility. The 10-match affair brings Akron, East Tennessee State, Temple and UNC Asheville to Columbia. The Gamecocks open the season against the Temple Owls at 12:30 p.m. on Fri., Aug. 24, and close the event against the UNC Asheville Bulldogs at 8 p.m. on Saturday.

Another four-game tournament takes place the next weekend for the Gamecocks, as they head to George Mason for The Mason Inn Patriot Invitational. South Carolina will square off against the host Patriots, Navy, Niagara and West Virginia during the two-day event set for Sept. 1-2. Niagara, South Carolina’s final foe in the event, is the three-time defending Mid-Atlantic Athletic Conference champion.

The Gamecocks host their final event before starting Southeastern Conference action against Clemson, UAB and Winthrop over Sept. 7-8. Dubbed the Carolina Clash presented by Courtyard Marriott, South Carolina opens the event against archrival Clemson at 7 p.m. on Friday night. The Gamecocks take on the Blazers at 11 a.m. on Saturday and close out the event versus Winthrop at 7:30 p.m.

“I am excited about our preseason schedule, and I believe it will help prepare our team for a very tough SEC schedule,” Swanson remarked. “We will play against several teams that will contend for titles in their respective conferences, which means we have to take every opponent very seriously in how we prepare and how we compete. We are looking forward to being able to host two weekends out of the three and hope that our fans are equally excited to get a pre-conference season preview of our steadily improving team.”

The Gamecocks will also play at Coastal Carolina for the first time in documented history this year, taking on the Chanticleers on Tues., Oct. 16, in Conway, S.C.

South Carolina previously released its SEC schedule, which included eight matches against teams that made the 2011 NCAA Tournament. Niagara pushes that total to nine, with six of those matches coming away from the Volleyball Competition Facility. The last time South Carolina hosted two tournaments was in 2003.
