SAITAMA, Japan – South Carolina sophomore Sabrina D’Angelo (Welland, Ontario) registered seven saves and displayed an amazing second half performance at Komaba Stadium, but a late penalty kick sealed a 2-1 Korea DPR victory Monday to knock Canada out of the 2012 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup.
Canada went 1-2-0 and finished third in Group C behind North Korea and Norway. D’Angelo registered 16 saves, one shutout and stopped a penalty kick against Norway in what will be her first and only three-match appearance at the Under-20 Women’s World Cup.
Canada went ahead early against North Korea in the 12th minute with a goal by Christine Exeter, but Kim Un-Hwa evened the score in the 33rd with a strike from the top of the ’18 that scored to the far post. Led by a 57 percent possession advantage, Korea DPR was able to continue mounting pressure on the Canadians en route to a 17-4 shot advantage in the match. Heroics by the goal keeper were able to keep the match level until Yun Hyon Hi was tackled in the box to set up the decisive penalty kick in the 78th.
D’Angelo returns to South Carolina Wednesday and will be eligible to compete for the Gamecocks beginning with Saturday’s rivalry matchup against Clemson. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Eugene E. Stone III Stadium.
