COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina freshman Kayla Lampe has been named the SEC Cross Country Women’s Freshman of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.

Lampe received the honor after leading the Gamecocks to a win at the Gamecock Invitational with a first-place finish. She crossed the finish line with a meet record of 17:10.2, which is the SEC’s best time by a freshman in the 5,000-meter run this season and third best time overall.

A native of Downingtown, Pa., Lampe was one of 10 Gamecocks to finish the meet in the top 15.

Lampe and the Gamecocks will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 15 at the Vanderbilt Pre-SEC Invitational at Percy Warner Park in Nashville, Tenn.
