HANAHAN, S.C. — The South Carolina women’s golf team opened the 2012-13 season on Sunday with a first-round score of 306 (+18) at the Cougar Classic at Yeamans Hall Club.

The Gamecocks wrapped up the day in 23rd place and will look to work their way up the leaderboard with two rounds remaining.

“Today was certainly not the start that we were expecting,” South Carolina head coach Kalen Harris said. “I was very pleased with our team’s qualifying rounds coming into this event, so I am confident that we will play solid golf over the next two days. Yeamans Hall Club is a golf course that provides several birdie opportunities, especially with several short par 5s. We need to stay patient and take advantage of the par 5 scoring opportunities the next two rounds.”

In her collegiate debut, freshman Sarah Schmelzel was one of two Gamecocks to lead the way on Sunday with a 3-over 75, joining junior Suzie Lee in a tie for 60th.

Schmelzel finished her day with three bogeys and 15 pars, while Lee recorded one birdie, four bogeys and 13 pars.

Junior Samantha Swinehart turned in a 5-over 77 to conclude the round in a tie for 88th. Senior Meredith Swanson and sophomore Justine Dreher are both tied for 108th after each shooting a 7-over 79.

Southern Cal will head into the second round with the lead after posting a 3-under 285. The Trojans hold a one-shot lead over Duke, Virginia and Florida.

Florida’s Isabelle Lendl and Auburn’s Marta Sanz are tied for the individual lead after shooting a 5-under 67 on Sunday.

The Gamecocks will be paired with Tennessee and Auburn for the second round and will tee off in the afternoon wave beginning at 11:50 a.m. on Monday. Live scoring will be available by clicking here.
