COACH SPURRIER POST-PRACTICE COMMENTS
September 26, 2012

The University of South Carolina football squad worked out at the Bluff Road practice fields on Wednesday afternoon. The sixth-ranked Gamecocks (4-0, 2-0 SEC) are preparing for Saturday’s SEC Eastern Division matchup with Kentucky (1-3, 0-1 SEC). Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Commonwealth Stadium in Lexington with ESPN2 airing the contest nationally. Mike Patrick and Ed Cunningham will call the game with Jeannine Edwards working the sidelines.

“We had a decent practice today,” said head coach Steve Spurrier. “Not anything exceptional one way or the other. We’re looking forward to the ballgame. Akeem Auguste looks like he can play a little bit up there for the first time this year, so we’re very healthy going into the ballgame. We’ll see if we can play a little better than we’ve been playing.”

The Gamecocks are the least penalized team in the SEC so far this season., “It’s probably called real good coaching if you ask me,” chuckled Coach Spurrier. “Our guys have been pretty disciplined. We had some careless penalties a couple weeks ago but overall we’re trying to play some disciplined ball. As we all know, you can win a bunch of games if you don’t beat yourself. We’re trying not to beat ourselves.”

Coach Spurrier indicated that starting right tackle Mike Matulis was held out of practice Wednesday with a slight shoulder sprain. Brandon Shell was taking reps at right tackle today, but Matulis should be ready on Saturday, according to the Head Ball Coach.

The Gamecocks will return to the practice fields on Thursday afternoon.
