CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The South Carolina women’s golf team fought through tough conditions and a more challenging setup at the UNC Finley Golf Course on Saturday to shoot a 13-over 301 in the second round of the Tar Heel Invitational.

The Gamecocks fell back to 10th place with a two-round total of 599 (+23) but they remain in the mix for a top-five finish as they are just eight strokes back of second place.

“I am pleased with the way we hung in there today,” South Carolina head coach Kalen Harris said. “The conditions and hole locations were much tougher today, and we got off to a slow start. The team showed a lot of fight. We are in a position to make a good finish with solid play tomorrow.”

For the eighth straight round, freshman Sarah Schmelzel went to the clubhouse with the lowest Gamecock score as she posted a 1-over 73 to remain in position for a top-10 finish. A native of Phoenix, Ariz., Schmelzel will enter the final round in a tie for seventh with a total of 145 (+1).

After making the turn at 1-over 37, Schmelzel birdied the par-3 12th to get back to even, but a bogey on the 13th moved her right back to 1-over. She fell to 2-over with a bogey on No. 17. However, she finished the round on a positive note with a birdie on No. 18 to wrap up the day at 1-over.

Junior Suzie Lee carded a 3-over 75 to climb 18 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 46th with a two-round score of 153 (+9). Lee struggled to a 3-over 39 on the front side but bounced back with an even-par 36 on the back nine, including two birdies, two bogeys and five pars.

Junior Samantha Swinehart remained near the top of the leaderboard after turning in a 4-over 76. Swinehart is tied for 20th with a total of 148 (+4).

Sophomore Justine Dreher shot a 77 (+5) and is in a tie for 55th with a score of 155 (+11), and senior Meredith Swanson is tied for 68th after shooting an 80 (+8) on Saturday.

Playing as an individual, freshman Chelsey Couch moved up the leaderboard with a 3-over 75. Couch is tied for 48th with a score of 154 (+10).

Tournament host North Carolina is in the lead with a score of 581 (+5), followed by Baylor (591), Florida (593), North Carolina State (595) and Virginia (595).

Baylor’s Hayley Davis holds a one-stroke lead heading into the final round after shooting a 1-over 73. Davis has a two-round total of 140 (-4).

The Gamecocks will be paired with Michigan State and Louisville for the final round, which will get underway with a shotgun start on Sunday at 9:15 a.m. Live scoring will be available by clicking here.
