COLUMBIA, S.C. – The University of South Carolina women’s soccer team hosted their fifth-annual Fan Appreciation Clinic in Tuesday night at Stone Stadium. Over 200 girls between the ages of 5 and 12 came out to enjoy a night with the women’s soccer team.
“We had another very successful Fan Appreciation Clinic! There was a tremendous turnout for the event, and our players and coaches did a wonderful job interacting with the participants and making it a memorable evening for these young girls. We appreciate seeing such support for our women’s soccer program. With the success of our clinics, we are so glad we can have an annual event to be able to personally thank the fans for that support,” South Carolina head coach Shelley Smith said of the team’s clinic.
Everyone in attendance enjoyed free food before hitting the field to break into groups. The groups of 10 then rotated between stations manned by student-athletes and coaches.
“We have some wonderful young women here representing the University of South Carolina. I am always so proud of our players and how engaged they are when they have the opportunity to coach and work at our camps and clinics. They do such a good job working with the kids and are such great role models for the youth players,” said Smith of her team.
After the small group work, those in attendance watched the soccer team play their favorite game of “butter ball” to show off their skills. A raffle of Gamecock gear and an extended autograph session ended the evening.
“The young girls love the chance to meet and play with our players,” Smith added. “It also gives our college players a chance to see what a positive effect they have on the girls in the community. All around, it was a tremendous evening and we look forward to doing it again next spring!
