BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The South Carolina women’s golf team posted a 309 (+21) on Saturday in the second round of the SEC Championship at Greystone Golf Club.

The Gamecocks will head into Sunday’s final round in sixth place with a total of 615 (+39). Carolina is just six shots back of second-place Mississippi State (609) and 18 back of tournament leader Alabama (597).

“We hung in there today. We obviously didn’t play as well as we would have liked to. We left a lot out there, but we are in a position to make a good finish,” South Carolina head coach Kalen Harris said. “I know they are excited to get back out there and make some birdies. We just need to stay patient. There were a lot of difficult pin placements today that were not accessible. I’m sure tomorrow’s pins will be just as difficult with it being Sunday. We look to play even better tomorrow and come home with a good finish.”

Carolina has three golfers in contention for a top-20 finish, as sophomore Justine Dreher, freshman Sarah Schmelzel and junior Suzie Lee each carded a 4-over 76 to lead the way on Saturday. Dreher is in a tie for seventh with a total of 150 (+6) and is six shots back of Alabama’s Stephanie Meadow (144) for the tournament lead. She concluded the day with three birdies and seven bogeys.

Schmelzel, who tallied one birdie and five bogeys for her round, is in a tie for 13th with a total of 152 (+8). Lee finished the day in a tie for 18th with a total of 154 (+10). She recorded one birdie, three bogeys and a double bogey on the afternoon.

Senior Meredith Swanson is in a tie for 42nd with a total of 159 (+15) after turning in an 81 (+9) on Saturday.

Rounding out the lineup, freshman Mary Fran Hillow shot an 83 (+11) to wrap up the round in 69th with a total of 169 (+25).

Eighteenth-ranked Georgia is in third place with a total of 611 (+35), followed by Kentucky (614) and LSU (614). Meadow has a two-shot lead over teammate Jennifer Kirby, who has a total of 146 (+2) after shooting a 71 (-1) on Saturday.

The teams will play in twosomes on Sunday in the final round. The Gamecocks will begin teeing off at 8:45 a.m. and will be paired with LSU. Live scoring will be available through Golfstat.
