INDIANAPOLIS — South Carolina senior Michael Flach opened the 2013 U.S. National Championships & World Championship Trials with a 14th-place finish in the 200-meter butterfly on Tuesday at the IU Natatorium.

Flach swam a time of 2:00.50 to touch the wall sixth in the B final of the event. He qualified for the finals by swimming a time of 1:59.98, which was the 12th fastest time in Tuesday morning’s preliminaries.

Flach will swim two more events at the trials as he will compete in the 200-meter freestyle on Wednesday and the 100-meter butterfly on Thursday. Senior Matt Navata will also compete this week as he is slated to swim the 400-meter IM on Thursday. The U.S. National Championships & World Championship Trials serves as the USA National Team selection for the 2013 FINA World Championships, which will be held July 16-Aug. 4 in Barcelona Spain.
