COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina sophomore Sarah Schmelzel carded a third-round 79 (+7) on Thursday to finish the day in a tie for fifth at the 83rd Trans National Amateur Championship at Schaffer’s Mill Golf and Lake Club in Truckee, Calif.
A native of Phoenix, Ariz., Schmelzel has a three-round total of 222 (+6) and is eight strokes back of Ashlan Ramsey and Hannah Suh, who share the tournament lead with a total of 214 (-2).
Schmelzel is slated to tee off in the final round on Friday at 10:50 a.m. PDT.
DREHER, TEAM FRANCE ELIMINATED FROM MEDAL CONTENTION
At the European Ladies’ Amateur Team Championship in York, England, Gamecock junior Justine Dreher and Team France fell in the opening round of match play on Thursday, dropping a 5 ½-1 ½ decision to second-seeded Spain. Dreher and teammate Ines Lescudier lost their match with Noemi Jimenez and Camilla Hedberg, 2 and 1.
The loss eliminates Dreher and Team France from medal contention, as they will now play against the Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden for places five through eight on Friday and Saturday. France is matched up with third-seeded Netherlands for Friday’s match play.
