COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina sophomores Will Starke and Matt NeSmith qualified for the 113th U.S. Amateur Championship earlier this week at a sectional qualifier at Columbia Country Club.
Starke, who is a native of Chapin, S.C., came up one stroke shy of medalist honors, finishing in second place with rounds of 69-67=136 (-6). A native of North Augusta, S.C., NeSmith claimed third place with rounds of 69-68=137 (-5). A total of four golfers out of a field of 94 qualified at the event.
This year’s U.S. Amateur Championship will be held at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass., on Aug. 12-18. A field of 312 golfers will play 36 holes of stroke play before it will be cut to the low 64 scorers for six rounds of match play.
