BARCELONA, Spain — South Carolina sophomore Marwan El Kamash broke a pair of Egyptian National records on the first two days at the 15th FINA World Championships in Barcelona, Spain.

A native of Alexandria, Egypt, El Kamash finished 24th in the 400-meter freestyle on Sunday with a time of 3:53.80, breaking his own Egyptian record of 3:55.18. He kept the momentum going with another solid swim on Monday in the 200-meter freestyle, finishing 29th with an Egyptian-record time of 1:49.33.

El Kamash had a standout freshman campaign for the Gamecocks in 2012-13. He earned All-America honors after helping lead South Carolina’s 800 freestyle relay team to a 15th-place finish at the NCAA Championships. He also made the finals in three events at the SEC Championships, finishing 12th in the 500 freestyle, 16th in the 1,650 freestyle and 21st in the 200 freestyle.
