Due to inclement weather in the Midlands, the No. 10/9 South Carolina football team practiced indoors on Tuesday afternoon. The Gamecocks (9-2, 6-2 SEC) are preparing for Saturday’s Top-10 matchup with No. 6/4 Clemson (10-1, 7-1 ACC).

The Tigers once again bring in a high-powered offense, but one that the Gamecocks have slowed during their four-game winning streak. “We’ve had a lot of really good football players in the past and we’ve got some good football players now,” said defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward. “We have to execute the system. Of course, you have to affect (Tajh) Boyd. If you don’t affect him, he’s going to put some points on you, so we have to try to affect him. I don’t know if we can rattle him, but we definitely want to get pressure on him early. He’ll pick you apart if you don’t.”

On the injury front, defensive tackle Kelcy Quarles (concussion) practiced at full-speed on Tuesday and should be ready to play on Saturday. Safety Brison Williams (forearm) practiced for a bit on Tuesday before working on conditioning. He is still questionable but is “getting better and better every day,” according to Ward. Defensive end Jadeveon Clowney (foot) is also listed as probable for Saturday’s showdown.

Ward knows the Tigers feature two outstanding receivers. “They had two great receivers last year,” reminded Ward. “One is starting in the NFL now. They still have two great receivers. Bryant has really stepped up his game. We’ve got to defend two great guys outside.”

Ward is familiar with the Clemson offense, noting that it hasn’t changed significantly from last year, but that familiarity doesn’t not necessary translate into over confidence. “Each year is different,” said Ward. “We’re playing with different players than we had last year. We’ve got to go execute. If we execute we’ll have a chance. If we don’t, then it could be a long night.”

Saturday’s game at a sold out Williams-Brice Stadium (80,250) is scheduled for a 7 p.m. ET start. ESPN2 will carry the telecast nationally with Mark Jones and Brock Huard working in the booth and Jessica Mendoza on the sidelines.
