Aleighsa Welch Named AgSouth Athlete of the Week

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Aleighsa Welch from the Gamecock women’s basketball has been named AgSouth Athlete of the Week.

Welch led the team in points and blocks over the week, leading the Gamecocks to a pair of wins that clinched a share of the SEC regular-season title, a first in school history. She also became one of 12 in Gamecock history to amass 1,000 points and 650 rebounds in her career.

She scored her SEC career high with 21 points to lead the Gamecocks to their first win at Kentucky since 2008. Welch finished off her double-double at UK with 10 rebounds to go with a career-high five blocked shots, including two on one possession to keep the Wildcats from getting closer than 11 with nine minutes to play.

Welch posted eight of her 12 points against Florida in the second half, including four to hold off a rally after the Gators cut the deficit to seven late in the second half.
