Opening Statement
It was a good win for us. It was good to get [Evan] Beal out there for the first time this year. I thought he threw the ball very well. I was a little bit worried just because he’s been a little bit rusty the few times that he got to throw to a few hitters in a practice setting. He threw the ball very well, he looked very composed, his change up was very good, and he threw a couple curve balls in there. He certainly gives us another option on our pitching staff and one with experience, talent and good stuff. I thought Curt [Britt] was ok, Vince [Fiori] was alright and Reed [Scott] finished the game up. It was a well-pitched game on our part. For the most part we played good defense, I guess we made one error on the comebacker there. But, all in all, I’m proud to get two wins this week on Tuesday and Wednesday when our team wasn’t necessarily at full strength. It’s a credit to our guys for circling the wagons a little bit and finding a way to keep winning. Coastal historically is a really good team, they have great tradition and Gary [Swanson] does an incredible job. He’s been hit by the injury bug, so to speak, he’s just had terrible luck with his personnel this year. He’s got some really good players over there that are unable to play and compete and I know he’s frustrated. If they’re at full strength he has a really, really good team. I hate that for him, but hopefully they can get their guys back and have a big finish for their season.
On Evan Beal’s role going into the future
He obviously gives us an option out of the bullpen going into the weekend. I don’t think we’re to a point where we need to tinker with our three guys on the weekend, but Evan certainly gives an option in the bullpen on the weekend and an option to start in the mid-week. I don’t really know what his role is right now; it’s one outing. But certainly, he’s been around the block here, he’s thrown in some big games, he’s been in some big moments, and he had a good summer. He’s got some confidence coming off what he was able to do this past summer in the Cape Cod League. It was good to see him in a competitive situation. Obviously, we can use an arm like that and stuff like that. In what specific role, I don’t know yet, but we’ll find a place to use him if he’s throwing like he threw tonight.

On his first start of the season
I was disappointed to get rained out for last week’s mid-week game but that stuff happens in baseball. I was medically cleared for the Ole Miss series and I didn’t get in there and I didn’t pitch at Kentucky. It has just been a long road and I am just glad to be feeling good and back in one piece.
On how he feels after tonight
I am certainly not in mid-season form yet. It was my first outing so I just wanted to go out and control the zone and throw strikes. I wasn’t worried about velocity because that will come when I get my arm back in shape. I have been throwing as much as I can through the injury to keep my arm in shape but nothing compares to game speed and going against an opponent when you’re on the mound. I have a little ways to go and I’m just shaking off the rust but I am happy with where I am right now.

On coming in during a close game
Evan [Beal] threw terrific for the first time out this year going four innings. I just did my best to keep their score at zero and get outs.
On getting out of the bases loaded situation
I probably should have never been in [that situation], the [ball that] came back to me that is an error that I could have easily avoided. I just have to do a better job of pounding the zone, working ahead, getting [runners] out quicker and putting myself in a better situation where I don’t have to fight back to get outs.

On his double in the second inning
It felt really good. I have been struggling, baseball is a game of failure and I have failed my fair share of times this past week so [getting that hit] felt really good.
Freshman Catcher Logan Koch
On getting a lot of playing time in recent games
It is my job to back up Grayson [Greiner]. If he goes down I’m here for him and though we want him to be as healthy as he can it has been fun getting my innings and at-bats in and doing whatever I can for our team.
On working with different pitchers in game situations.
I caught these guys all fall so it wasn’t anything new. I catch their bullpens during the week and just try to prepare myself for anytime that I am called upon and I felt that I was prepared to catch them. Catching Curt [Britt] and Evan [Beal] is fun because they spot up well, as do Reed [Scott] and Vince [Fiori]. It really makes my job look easy when they only give up one hit and hit their spots.
