COACH SPURRIER POST-PRACTICE COMMENTS
March 27, 2014

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The University of South Carolina football squad worked out for about two hours at the Bluff Road practice fields on Thursday afternoon. It was the squad’s seventh practice of the spring, as they are nearing the halfway point of their 15 allotted workouts.

Head coach Steve Spurrier expects to rotate his quarterbacks during the scrimmage on Saturday as he has traditionally done. “They move around – the second, third and fourth guy – every day. Connor Mitch did a lot better than he’s been doing today. Brendan (Nosovitch) struggles throwing the ball some, but he’s an excellent runner.” Spurrier indicated that Perry Orth and Connor Mitch would be listed as co-No. 2’s on the depth chart after today.

Coach commented on the recent ruling regarding Northwestern University and the union. “I thought it was interesting. I’ve advocated giving college football players and college basketball players a stipend. Our commissioners and our presidents and our NCAA people talk about it but haven’t done anything at all yet, so we’ll see if they come up with a plan here real soon. I think the Northwestern kids were just trying to show that they work for the university a little bit. They bring in a lot of money to the university. I think that’s what they’re trying to say. I see their point a little bit. I hope it doesn’t come down to where all schools are forming unions. I hope that the NCAA, the BCS conferences especially, can afford to give a stipend.”

The Gamecocks will practice again on Friday at the Bluff Road “Proving Grounds” before moving into Williams-Brice Stadium on Saturday morning for a 10 a.m. scrimmage.
