Throughout the spring, Gamecocksonline.com will catch up with the sand volleyball team for a feature called Sand Talk, giving an inside look at the lives of each player. This week we are featuring Mikaela Christiaansen.
Why did you choose South Carolina?
I chose the University of South Carolina because I felt a strong connection with the team members and the coaches. I also love how the community of Columbia and the school in general are so supportive of all of the athletic teams.
What word or phrase best describes this team?
#fortheloveofthegame – I think all of us genuinely enjoy coming to practice every day and playing the sport.
What does it mean to you to be a part of South Carolina’s first-ever sand team?
It is a great honor to be a part of the first-ever sand volleyball team at South Carolina. We have the opportunity to set the tone for the rest of the program’s history.
When you were growing up, what did you want to be?
When I was growing up, I wanted to be a vet because I love animals.
If you had to choose one meal to eat for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Peanut butter and banana sandwich

What are your career goals?
I would love to work in Public Relations or Marketing in the Sports or Entertainment business.

My parents
What has been your favorite class so far at South Carolina?
I have really enjoyed Sport and Entertainment 385 (ethics in sport and entertainment) because it has broadened my view of how other people look at current issues in today’s society.
What is your favorite TV show?
Friday Night Lights
What is your go-to restaurant in Columbia?
Tazkikis – Their Greek food is amazing
What is your favorite thing about playing sand volleyball?
I love how you pretty much control the game because there are only two people on your side, so no matter what you are going to touch the ball every play. I also love being outdoors and even more so being on the beach.
What is your dream vacation?
I would love to go on a backpacking tour of Europe and just explore and experience all of the different cultures over there.

Sarah Blomgren
What is your most memorable athletic moment?
My most memorable athletic moment would be winning the AVCA national sand championship my freshman year at Pepperdine.
When did you first start playing sand volleyball/volleyball and what drew you to the game?
I started playing sand volleyball in middle school because my family and friends were always playing it.
What is one thing you cannot live without?
Chocolate
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I like to hang out with my friends and do anything outdoorsy.
