Grayson Greiner Named Second-Team Capital One Academic All-America

May 30, 2014

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina junior catcher Grayson Greiner captured a spot on the 2014 Capital One Academic All-America Second Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America, the group released today.

A semifinalist for the Johnny Bench Award, Greiner leads the Gamecocks in seven categories, including with his eight homers, 50 RBI and a .515 slugging percentage. Those three marks all stand in the top five in the Southeastern Conference, while he also tops his team with 13 doubles, five sacrifice flies and a .403 on-base percentage. The 2014 SEC All-Defensive Team honoree at catcher, Greiner has started 52 games behind the plate, managing a pitching staff that ranks eighth in NCAA Division I in ERA (2.37), fifth in shutouts (12), sixth in strikeout-to-walk ratio (3.00) and ninth in WHIP (1.12).

Greiner continues a streak of a Gamecock making the Capital One Academic All-America teams to four years, following LB Dantzler’s Academic All-America Division I Baseball Player of the Year nod last season and Michael Roth’s two selections to the first team in 2011-12. The only other SEC student-athlete to make the listing this year is Kentucky’s Austin Cousino on the third team. Columbia Regional participants Maryland (Kyle Convissar, second team DH) and Campbell (Matt Parrish, third team DH) also garnered the accolade.

Tim Colwell of North Dakota State earned the individual honor this year, while both Liberty and Mercer had two players make the first team.

To be considered for the Capital One Academic All-America Team, a student-athlete must have a 3.30 cumulative grade point average and be at least a sophomore both athletically and academically in school. They must be in their second year on the nominating teams campus to be honored as well. Greiner, an accounting major, held a 3.47 GPA through the fall of 2013.
