COLUMBIA, S.C. — Top-seeded South Carolina saw its season come to an end with a 10-1 loss to second-seeded Maryland on Sunday night in the NCAA Columbia Regional at Carolina Stadium.

With the win, the Terrapins (39-21) claimed the Columbia Regional title and advanced to the program’s first Super Regional. The Gamecocks finish the season with a 44-18 record. It’s the first time since 2009 South Carolina hasn’t advanced to a Super Regional and the first time since 1976 it has lost a regional at home.

South Carolina managed nine hits on the night, including two apiece from first baseman Kyle Martin and center fielder Tanner English.

Maryland tallied 13 hits, with center fielder Charlie White going 3-for-4 to lead the way. Jose Cuas, Blake Schmit and Anthony Papio added two hits each.

Terrapin reliever Tayler Stiles (5-2) earned the win after working two scoreless innings, giving up three hits and striking out one. Reliever Bobby Ruse picked up his first save of the season by working the final 3 1/3 innings and giving up just a hit with three strikeouts.

Gamecocks starting pitcher Joel Seddon (3-2) took the loss as he surrendered five runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings on the mound, the longest outing of his career. He matched his career-high in strikeouts with six.

The Gamecocks found success at the plate in the bottom of the first. Marcus Mooney led off with a single up the middle. Three batters later, Martin ripped a two-out double to left center, and Mooney beat the throw home to give South Carolina a 1-0 lead.

However, Maryland took the lead for good with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth. White singled to lead off the inning, and LaMonte Wade drew a walk before both runners advanced to second and third with no outs on a wild pitch by Seddon. Shortstop Blake Schmit delivered a two-out single to left field, driving home both White and Wade to give the Terrapins a 2-1 advantage.

The Terrapins added a run in the fifth, as Papio singled and later scored when Wade reached on a fielder’s choice, giving Maryland a 3-1 lead.

Maryland went on to add seven more runs over the final four innings to earn its trip to the Super Regional.
