ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. — South Carolina junior Matt NeSmith made his first career hole-in-one on his final hole of the first round to shoot a 1-over 73 at the Jones Cup Invitational on Friday at Ocean Forest Golf Club.

A native of North Augusta, S.C., NeSmith made the hole-in-one on the par-3 ninth to get into the clubhouse in a tie for fourth with two rounds left to play. Kyle Jones of Snowflake, Ariz., leads the tournament after shooting a 4-under 68.

Senior Will Murphy shot a 76 (+4) and is tied for 37th. Junior Will Starke turned in a 78 (+6) and is tied for 52nd, while freshman Keenan Huskey shot an 84 (+12) and is tied for 83rd.

The Jones Cup Invitational is one of the top amateur events in the world and features a field with golfers from 13 countries. The winner will receive a sponsor’s exemption to the PGA Tour’s McGladrey Classic.

NeSmith will tee off in the second round on Saturday at 9:40 a.m. Murphy will tee off at 9:30, followed by Starke (10) and Huskey (10:10). Live scoring will be available through GOLFSTAT.
