COLUMBIA, S.C — South Carolina junior Matt NeSmith has been named the Golfweek Player of the Week, Golfweek announced Monday.
NeSmith receives the honor after becoming just the second golfer in program history to win medalist honors at the SEC Championship and leading the Gamecocks to a tie for second finish. He won the title by six strokes with a 54-hole total of 196 (-14), which is a school SEC Championship record. NeSmith posted rounds of 65, 64 and 67 and recorded just one bogey on the weekend.
The tournament win is the second-straight for NeSmith, making him the first Gamecock to win consecutive events since Carl Paulson won the PING Intercollegiate (4/11/93) and the Billy Hitchcock Intercollegiate (4/25/93) back-to-back in 1993.
A native of North Augusta, S.C., NeSmith has five top-10 finishes on the season, including three top-fives. He has lowered his stroke average to 70.07 and has carded seven-straight rounds in the 60s.
NeSmith and the Gamecocks will now wait on NCAA Regional pairings to be announced on Monday, May 4 live on the Golf Channel’s Morning Drive.
