COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina’s men’s soccer team held its annual alumni weekend gathering over April 17-18, culminating with a match pitting the alumni against the varsity team on Saturday.
Over forty alumni returned for the festivities, which included a Friday night social and the alumni match, with many participating. The alumni jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal by Ryan Freiburger, and Ray Fischer added a second. The current Gamecocks, however, claimed the contest 5-2.
“What a great weekend we had with our alumni,” said Gamecock head coach Mark Berson. “It’s really meaningful when guys make the time to come back to campus and keep in touch with the program. We had a tremendous turnout, a great game and a nice barbeque after the match. This event brings our players, staff and alumni full circle. The friendships and bonds our guys forge here during their careers are in place for life.”
Alumni returned from as far away as Norway (John Harr and Anders Ronnevig), California (Ryan Daley), New York (Ray Fischer) and all points in between.
South Carolina hits the field again in August for its 2015 season, its 38th as a varsity sport. Last year’s team made the Conference USA Tournament Finals and finished at 10-10 on the season.
