University of South Carolina junior Sydney Smith was named NCEA Equitation Over Fences Rider of the Month for November after posting a perfect 3-0 record with one M.O.P.
COLUMBIA, S.C. – University of South Carolina junior Sydney Smith was named National Rider of the Month (November) in equitation over fences by the National Collegiate Equestrian Association (NCEA), it was announced Tuesday.
This marks the 14th time that a Gamecock rider has earned the monthly award, and Smith becomes the eighth Gamecock all-time to be named National Rider of the Month. She is the first Gamecock rider to win the national award since Amber Henter (February 2015 – equitation over fences).
Smith, a redshirt junior from Madison, Conn., was the only Gamecock with a perfect 3-0 jumping record during the month of November. All three of her victories came on the road, and she also claimed her first career Most Outstanding Player award. In the Gamecocks’ Nov. 6 competition at Baylor, she posted a 83-70 win over her opponent. The next day at SMU, Smith earned her first career M.O.P. with a 88-66 victory over her Mustang opponent. She closed out the fall with a 76-70 win at No. 2 Georgia.
The Gamecocks have wrapped up fall competition, but Carolina returns to action on January 30 against Tennessee-Martin.
