BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — University of South Carolina Men’s Golf senior Matt NeSmith was named Southeastern Conference Men’s Golfer of the Week, the league announced Wednesday evening. It’s the first SEC weekly honor of the season for NeSmith and the second of his Gamecock career.
NeSmith won the SEC’s top weekly honor after capturing medalist honors at the Palmetto Intercollegiate, held March 7-8 in Aiken, S.C. A product of nearby North Augusta, S.C., NeSmith’s score of 67-67-69=203 (-7) took the top individual spot by one stroke. The tournament victory was NeSmith’s third as a Gamecock.
A Ben Hogan Award Watch List selection, NeSmith’s stellar play at the Palmetto guided the Gamecocks to a team victory at the tournament. As a team, Carolina’s score of 821 (-19) was 18 strokes better than the field and set a new Palmetto Intercollegiate tournament record.
NeSmith is no stranger to conference and national recognition. The senior is a two-time All-SEC selection, a three-time PING All-Southeast Region pick, and a two-time PING All-American. He was named SCGA Player of the Year in December and earned SEC Freshman of the Year laurels in 2013. He was also the medalist at the SEC Championship in 2015.
UP NEXT FOR THE GAMECOCKS
NeSmith and the Gamecocks will compete at the General Hackler Championship this weekend in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Coastal Carolina hosts the event, which will be held March 12-13.
