AWENDAW, S.C. — The University of South Carolina Men’s Golf team navigated tough conditions and a crowded leaderboard to take an eight-stroke lead after two days at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate. The Gamecocks shot a 284 (-4) on Monday for a two-round total of 561 (-15), and sophomore Keenan Huskey rose to the top of the individual leaderboard after shooting 71 (-1) in his second round.

Huskey is even with Auburn’s Matt Gilchrest at the top of the individual standings with a two-day total of 136 (-8), three shots clear of the rest of the field. In the team standings, the 16th-ranked Gamecocks lead No. 10 Wake Forest through two days, with the Demon Deacons at 569 (-7).

After a bogey-free 65 (-7) on Sunday that set a new personal best, Huskey was steady on Monday en route to his 71. The sophomore recorded four birdies in the second round and is within striking distance of his second career tournament title. He also captured the Camden Collegiate Invitational in October.

South Carolina’s top performer on Monday was freshman Scott Stevens. The Chattanooga, Tenn., native carded a 68 (-4) and is now tied for 13th overall at 143 (-1). Stevens tallied five birdies on Monday and rose 32 spots on the individual leaderboard.

Sean Kelly is also tied for 13th overall at 143 (-1) following a round of 71 (-1) on Monday at Bulls Bay Golf Club. The senior birdied three straight holes beginning with the par-5 4th, and he added birdies on the par-3 14th and 17th holes to help the Gamecocks build a commanding team lead down the stretch on Monday.

Senior Matt NeSmith is tied for 18th overall, at 144 (E) through two rounds. NeSmith recovered from bogeys on his first two holes to post a steady 74 (+2) on Monday. He is currently riding a streak of four consecutive top-five finishes and can add to the run by climbing 13 places on Tuesday.

Will Starke shot 76 (+4) on Monday and is now tied for 34th at the Hootie, at 146 (+2). The medalist at Mackenzie Tour Q-School on Saturday, Starke added two birdies to his ledger on Monday.

Quoting Coach Bill McDonald

“It was good day for us considering Will and Matt struggled. I think the long week is starting to catch up to them. Scott’s round was very impressive in some pretty strong winds along with some tough pin locations. Keenan and Sean gave us solid efforts too. Tomorrow should be a great experience for these guys and hopefully we can come out focused and ready to defend our title.”

Round Changer

Stevens posted his fourth round in the 60’s this season and his first sub-70 round since March 12 at the General Hackler Championship. Three of the freshman’s sub-70 efforts have come in the spring season. He can notch his fourth straight top-10 finish and his fifth overall in 2015-16 by moving up three spots on Tuesday.

Notable

  • With an individual win on Tuesday, Huskey would become the eighth Gamecock to win two medalist honors in a season, joining Allen Powers (1966-67), Steve Liebler (1979-80), Carl Paulson (1992-93), Kyle Thompson (1998-99 and 2000-01), George Bryan IV (2009-10), Paul Woodbury (2009-10) and NeSmith (2014-15 and 2015-16).
  • Huskey and NeSmith would be the second Gamecock duo to each win twice in a season, joining Bryan and Woodbury in 2009-10.
  • South Carolina is looking for their fourth tournament win of the season this week, which would be the second-best single-year mark in school history.

Up Next for the Gamecocks

The Gamecocks will tee off at 9:40 a.m. on Tuesday as they aim to win the Hootie for the second straight season. South Carolina will be paired with Wake Forest and College of Charleston, with live scoring available all day long through Golfstat.com.
