INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The University of South Carolina Men’s Golf team earned the No. 3 seed in the 2016 NCAA Tuscaloosa Regional, it was announced on Thursday morning. Ranked 17th in the nation heading into the NCAA postseason, the Gamecocks will compete alongside of 12 other teams at Ol’ Colony Golf Complex in Tuscaloosa, Ala., from May 16-18.

The top five teams and the low individual not on those teams from the Tuscaloosa Regional will advance to the NCAA Championship, to be played May 27 through June 1 at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore.

With their selection on Thursday, the Gamecocks will make their 24th NCAA Regional appearance and their 20th in the last 21 seasons. South Carolina won the 2007 West Regional in Tempe, Ariz., and they have advanced out of their Regional and into the NCAA Championship in each of the last three seasons.

Led by the senior trio of Sean Kelly, Matt NeSmith and Will Starke, South Carolina tied for second in 2013 in Columbus, Ohio, finished fifth in 2014 in Eugene, Ore., and placed second last season as the top seed in Bremerton, Wash. Overall, the Gamecocks have qualified for the NCAA Championship four times under head coach Bill McDonald.

NeSmith and Starke have each posted a pair of individual top-10 finishes at NCAA Regionals. In 2013, NeSmith tied for second and Starke tied for ninth, while last season, NeSmith tied for seventh and Starke tied for 10th. Kelly’s best Regional finish came in 2015, when he tied for 20th.

In addition to their senior trio, McDonald’s lineup in Tuscaloosa will feature sophomore Keenan Huskey and freshman Scott Stevens. Both underclassmen will be making their NCAA Regional debuts.

The Gamecocks enter the Tuscaloosa Regional on the heels of a very successful 2015-16 regular season. As a team, McDonald’s club won the Camden Collegiate Invitational, Palmetto Intercollegiate, General Hackler Championship and Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate. Huskey was the medalist in Camden and at the Hootie, while NeSmith topped the field at the Palmetto and the General Hackler.
