Retro Music Nights are Coming to Founders Park this Week

There’s nothing like music to take you back to a certain time and place, and a couple of themed nights at South Carolina baseball will help put you there this week. South Carolina public address announcer and longtime local radio disc jockey “Shakin’ ” Dave Aiken will harken back to his alter ego as he spins the hits from decades gone by at Founders Park on Tuesday when South Carolina hosts Presbyterian College, and Saturday’s game against Texas A&M will be ’90s Night.

“I think this will be fun,” Aiken said “Shakin’ Dave will always be a part of my DNA. Since the early 80s, I have been playing the greatest hits of the 50s, 60s, and 70s. We are working on spotlighting the big songs on the charts when some well-known Gamecocks were born. It’s the golden age of Rock and Roll, and music that all ages are familiar with. Plus we are going to play some big hits that aren’t played at the games. I hope we can bring back the flavor of my radio show and maybe even engage the fans in the music.”

The first 1,000 fans for Tuesday’s game will receive a 1970s-style “big hair” wig, which is tastefully garnet and black. The pregame, between innings, and opposing team’s music will take us to the “way back” file.

It may be too warm for 1990s grunge flannel on Saturday, but shorts and doc martens or any of your leftover rave clothing may be acceptable as fans are more than welcome to dress the part for Saturday’s game against the Aggies.

“Saturday is `90s Night for senior day because all of this year’s seniors on the baseball team were born in the 1990s,” said Amber Wise, South Carolina Assistant Director of Marketing. “So there will be `90s music all night. The best dressed 1990s fan will receive a baseball autographed by Head Coach Chad Holbrook.”

For traditionalists out there, don’t worry. The Gamecocks won’t be donning any retro-throwback uniforms, and the players’ walk-up and introduction music will not be changed for either of the games.

First pitch for Saturday’s Senior Day game is 7:30 p.m.
