COLUMBIA, S.C. – The University of South Carolina equestrian program posted its second best GPA in team history, it was announced Wednesday. The Gamecocks posted a 3.526 GPA for the spring semester.

“One of the goals we set this year was to have a team GPA at 3.5 or higher. I am very proud of the effort our young women put in to their studies this entire year but especially this semester,” South Carolina head coach Boo Major said. “They are proof that at the University of South Carolina, we pride ourselves in not only having great athletes but also having great students as well. They are here to get an education first and foremost which is evident in the grades they are making.”

The equestrian team placed 25 student-athletes on the SEC Winter Academic Honor Roll, it was announced last month.

Rising senior Bailey Mierzejewski was named 2016 SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year. Mierzejewski currently has a 4.0 GPA in the South Carolina College of Pharmacy.

For the second year in a row, the Gamecocks led all NCAA equestrian teams with eight riders earning First Team Academic honors from the National Collegiate Equestrian Association (NCEA). South Carolina had another four riders earn Second Team Academic honors, while three riders earned Honor Mention honors. The Gamecocks also placed 20 riders on the NCEA Honor Roll.
