Gudjonsson Earns C-USA Offensive Player of Week

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Sophomore forward Bjorn Gudjonsson was named Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week league officials announced Monday. The player of the week accolade is the second for Gudjonsson this season.
Gudjonsson came off the bench and scored the first goal in South Carolina’s 2-1 win over No. 12 Kentucky in the team’s regular season finale on Friday, November 4. He found the back of the net in the 44th minute after sneaking a left footed shot past UK’s Stuart Ford. The goal was the sophomore striker’s seventh of the season, which is tied for the team lead with senior Danny Deakin.
He ranks second on the team in points with 15 (7G, 1A). The Reykjavik, Iceland, native, finished the regular season ranked sixth in C-USA in points. His seven goals tied for fifth-most in the league.
The sophomore striker won the award back on Oct. 3 after scoring two goals in three games. He tallied the first multi-goal game of his career in the team’s 3-1 win versus High Point at Stone Stadium. Gudjonsson then scored again in the team’s 2-1 victory over Marshall later in the week.
The Gamecocks are traveling to Huntington, W. Va. this week for the C-USA Men’s Soccer Championship. Carolina, who is the No. 2 seed in the tournament, faces seventh-seeded Old Dominion on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. ET. The Gamecocks downed the Monarchs 3-2 on the road back on Oct. 22.
