HUMBLE, Texas — South Carolina is in seventh place after day one of the 2017 All-American Intercollegiate presented by Coca-Cola. The Gamecocks, who finished Friday at 1-over, were one of 12 teams unable to finish the opening round due to a weather delay that lasted nearly three hours. Play was suspended Friday night due to darkness.
Two freshmen, Caleb Proveaux and Jamie Wilson, led the way for the Gamecocks in the opening round. Proveaux shot his first career under-par round, carding a 71 (-1) on Friday. He shot 35 (-1) on the front nine and 36 (E) on the back. The Lexington, S.C., native, tallied three birdies and is tied for 12th individually.
Wilson shot an even par 72 and is tied for 18th. He shot 35 (-1) on the front nine and 37 (+1) on the back. The Mount Pleasant, S.C., native, led the team with four birdies, three of which came on the first nine holes.
Junior Keenan Huskey, junior Ben Dietrich and sophomore Scott Stevens each have to finish their first rounds on Saturday morning. Huskey and Stevens are both 1-over through 15 holes, while Dietrich is 5-over through 15.
Houston sits atop the leaderboard currently at 9-under par. No. 13 Baylor (-4) and SMU (-2) round out the top three in the team standings. The Bears’ Cooper Dossey and UT-San Antonio’s Bryce Alley are tied for first individually at 4-under.
Quoting Coach Bill McDonald
“Our freshmen came out today ready to play and I was really impressed with how they handled everything. We need out other guys to finish strong in the morning and hopefully we can get into good position for the second round. Overall, I’m very pleased with how our guys played today.”
Round Changer
Caleb Proveaux bested his previous career-low (73) with his 71 on Friday. Proveaux and Jamie Wilson are making their debuts in the starting lineup for the Gamecocks this weekend in Texas.
Notable
- Huskey and Stevens are tied for 33rd and remain in striking distance of jumping up the leaderboard tomorrow.
- After a triple bogey on the par-5 fourth, Dietrich shot +1 over his next 11 holes with a birdie and eight pars.
