AIKEN, S.C. — South Carolina sits in fourth place at the 2017 Palmetto Intercollegiate after the first and second rounds on Monday. The Gamecocks shot 279 (-1) in the opening round and 287 (+7) in the second round. Junior Keenan Huskey leads the way individually, as he’s T-12th at 1-under.
Huskey was stellar the first 18 holes, shooting 65 (-5) to place him in a three-way tie at the top of the leaderboard. The Greenville, S.C. native had six birdies and just one bogey. In round two, he carded a 74 (+4) with three birdies. Huskey carded a triple-bogey on the par-4 12th and was unable to get the lost strokes back in his remaining holes of the round.
Sophomore Ryan Stachler had a solid day and is tied for 19th at 2-over. He shot 69 (-1) the opening round, good for his first round of the season in the 60s. In the second round, he carded a 73 (+3) with two birdies.
Freshman Caleb Proveaux is T-28th at 4-over after posting consecutive 72s on Monday. He finished with five birdies on the day. Sophomore Scott Stevens is tied for 37th at 5-over. He posted an opening 73 (+3) and a 72 (+2) in the second round.
After struggling in the first round, freshman Jamie Wilson bounced back nicely with an even par 70 in round two. Wilson had two birdies and just two bogeys in the second round. The Mount Pleasant, S.C., native, was the SEC Freshman of the Week on Feb. 22 after a strong debut at the All-American Intercollegiate in which he led the team with 11 birdies.
No. 3 Virginia has a comfortable lead in the team race at 17-under par. The Cavaliers shot 273 (-7) in the opening round and 270 (-10) in the second round. No. 16 Clemson (-14) and Augusta (-2) round out the team’s ahead of Carolina in the team race. Doc Redman (Clemson) and Derek Bard (Virginia) are the 36-hole co-leaders at 6-under. A rare feat occurred for a college golf tournament as two players had hole-in-ones on Monday.
Quoting Coach Bill McDonald
“It was a frustrating day for us overall. We played pretty sloppy at times but really well in spots. We are having way too many big numbers and not playing the par 5s like we should be. We need to come out tomorrow a little sharper and put a nice round together.”
Round Changer
Huskey carded the 32nd round of his career at par or better with his first round 65. 11 of his 16 rounds in the 2016-17 season are par or better, and he’s played seven rounds in the 60s. Huskey will be gunning for his second top-five finish of the season for the Gamecocks on Tuesday at Palmetto Golf Club. His nine birdies Monday led the team.
Notable
- Carolina had 27 birdies and leads the field with 113 pars after two rounds.
- Huskey is tied for second in the field with a 4.00 scoring average on the par 5s. He birdied four long holes on Monday.
Up Next for the Gamecocks
Carolina will be paired with East Carolina and Georgia Southern in the final round tomorrow. It’ll be another 8:30 a.m. shotgun start for the field, with Gamecocks teeing off on holes four through six.
