Thornwell Named To USBWA All-District Team

March 7, 2017

COLUMBIA, S.C. – University of South Carolina senior guard Sindarius Thornwell has been named to the USBWA (U.S. Basketball Writers Association) All-District III Team, the organization announced on Tuesday morning. District III includes the states of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Maryland. The honor is the first of Thornwell’s career, and marks the second straight year a Gamecock has been named to the All-District squad (Michael Carrera in 2016).

Thornwell has had an outstanding season thus far in 2016-17, posting double-digit points in every game of the season, which includes 15 20-point outings and a career high 44 points against Alabama. He has led or shared the team lead in scoring 17 times, in rebounding 11 times, in assists 11 times and in steals 16 times. Thornwell was key in two Gamecock wins over ranked opponents early in the season, scoring 21 points in the victory over No. 25/24 Michigan, and then he followed with 16 points, five assists and three steals in a win over No. 18/16 Syracuse in the following game. He had a standout performance in Carolina’s contest at then-No. 5 Kentucky, posting what was then a career high 34 points. He followed later in the SEC campaign with a career high 44 points and 21 rebounds against Alabama, which marked the most points in a game by a Gamecock since 1979 and the most rebounds in a contest since 1993. Thornwell currently ranks fifth all-time at Carolina entering postseason play, scoring 529 points this season to reach 1,807 for his career. He is one of just five Gamecocks all-time to reach the 1,800-point plateau.

South Carolina finished in a tie for third place in the SEC standings and has earned the No. 4 seed in this week’s SEC Tournament in Nashville. The Gamecocks open tournament action on Friday in the quarterfinals at approximately 3:30 p.m. ET, on the SEC Network. Continue to visit GamecocksOnline.com for updates on the Gamecocks.
