PALM CITY, Fla. — South Carolina shot 300 in the opening round of the Valspar Collegiate Invitational and is tied for seventh place with USF. Sophomore Scott Stevens (T-9th) and junior Keenan Huskey (T-11th) paced the Gamecocks in the first round, as they’re both in the top-15 individually.

Stevens shot even par 71 and recorded three birdies. He was 2-over on the front side and shot a 2-under 34 on the back nine. The Chattanooga, Tenn., native, has played 11 rounds at par or better this season, which ranks second on the team.

Huskey carded a first round 72 with four birdies, three of which came on the front nine. The Greenville, S.C. has finished in the top-25 in all seven of Carolina’s tournaments in the 2016-17 season. His three top-five finishes lead the team.

Freshman Caleb Proveaux is tied for 50th after a first round 78 (+7). Fellow freshman Jamie Wilson is right behind Proveaux, as he’s tied for 59th after shooting 79 (+8) on Saturday. Sophomore Ryan Stachler, who has recorded two-straight top-10 finishes, is tied for 71st after carding an 82 (+11) on Sunday.

No team shot over par in the first round as No. 14 Texas A&M has the 18-hole lead at 4-over after shooting 288. No. 10 Wake Forest (+7) is second and North Texas (+8) is third. Cory Churchman of North Texas is alone at the top of the leaderboard after shooting 68 (-3) in the first round.

Quoting Coach Bill McDonald

“We got off to a rough start today in windy and difficult conditions, but the guys hung in there played really well down the stretch. This team is developing some toughness at the right time of year and we are looking forward to tomorrow.”

Round Changer Scott Stevens

Stevens logged his 27th career round of par or better on Sunday. He came into the tournament second on the team with a 70.65 scoring average. Stevens will be gunning for his 10th career top-10 finish over the course of the next two days.

  • Wilson is tied for the field lead with five birdies. Huskey is tied for sixth with four.
  • The Gamecocks had 15 birdies overall in round one, good for third in the tournament field.
