PALM CITY, Fla. — Sophomore Scott Stevens and junior Keenan Huskey remain near the top of the individual leaderboard at the Valspar Collegiate Invitational for South Carolina, which wrapped up second-round action Monday at the Floridian National Golf Club. The Gamecocks currently sit in eighth place at 19-over 587 for the tournament after carding a 287 (+3) on day two of the 54-hole event.
Stevens, who opened the tournament with an even 71 Sunday, posted a 1-under 70 in the second round to end the day one shot off the lead in a tie for third place (141, -1). The Chattanooga, Tenn., native registered five birdies today, including three over his final nine holes. He earned back-to-back birdies on Nos. 3 and 4 and tallied the final one of his day on the par-4 sixth.
Huskey sits just outside the top 10 in a tie for 11th (144, +2) after recording three birdies on his round, starting on the par-4 10th. He posted a 37 (+1) on his front nine before playing his final nine holes at even following a bogey on No. 2 and a birdie on No. 8.
Gamecock freshman Jamie Wilson (T33, +6) boasted the low round of the day among Gamecocks after firing a 2-under 69. The Mt. Pleasant, S.C., native, who birdied two of her first four holes and made the turn at 1-under 35, found his stroke down the stretch with three-straight birdies on Nos. 4-6. Carolina sophomore Ryan Stachler will head into the final round in a tie for 71st (158, +16) after posting a 5-over 76 in Monday’s second round. Caleb Proveaux, the Gamecocks’ other freshman in the field this week, was disqualified for the tournament during round-two action.
No. 10 Wake Forest (571, +3) overtook Houston for the 36-hole lead following its 4-under 280 in the second round, while the Cougars (580, +12), third-ranked Oklahoma State (T3, +14) and Georgia Tech (T3, +14) round out the top four spots. Thomas Rosenmueller of North Texas and Wake Forest’s Eric Bae hold the individual lead at 2-under 140.
Quoting Coach Bill McDonald
“We played a solid round today I thought. We have a chance tomorrow to move well up the leaderboard with a good effort. Even though the course played a little easier today, it’s still a pretty good round to be around par as a team.”
Round Changer Jamie Wilson
Jamie Wilson caught fire on his back nine Monday with three-straight birdies on holes Nos. 4, 5 and 6. His 10 birdies through two rounds are tied for the best in the field.
Notable
- Carolina’s 30 birdies through two rounds of play are good for the second-best total in the 14-team field.
- Sophomore Scott Stevens ranks third in the field in par-4 scoring average with a mark of 3.89. Junior Keenan Huskey’s 3.00 par-4 scoring average is fourth among golfers.
