Men’s Freshman of the Week: Darrell Singleton Jr.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – University of South Carolina freshman Darrell Singleton Jr. was named SEC Men’s Freshman of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. It’s the first weekly honor the Charleston, S.C., native.

Singleton made his collegiate debut last week at the Hurricane Invitational. The freshman took second individually in the 100m and was a member of the Gamecock relay team that finished second in the 4x100m. His time of 10.53 in the 100m ranks eighth in the NCAA East Region, while the 4×100 relay squad is listed sixth regionally at 40.37.

In the 100m, Singleton is the top freshman performer in the SEC this season, with his 10.53 clocking in behind only Gamecock teammate David Winters, at 10.36 among all conference sprinters.

Singleton is the third Gamecock honored with a conference weekly award this season. Fellow Gamecock rookie Eric Favors was named SEC Men’s Freshman of the Week on Feb. 21, while senior Taranisha Taylor was honored as Women’s Runner of the Week on the same day.
