KANNAPOLIS, N.C. — The South Carolina men’s golf team, fresh off a win at the Hootie At Bulls Bay Intercollegiate last week, sits in sixth place at the 2017 Irish Creek Intercollegiate after shooting even par through 36 holes. The 24th-ranked Gamecocks shot 286 (+2) in the opening round and 282 (-2) in the second round on Sunday. Freshman Jamie Wilson continued his outstanding play and is T-8th at 2-under after pacing the team on day one.

Wilson shot a 2-over 73 to start the day, then fired a career 18-hole low 67 (-4) in the second round. The Mount Pleasant, S.C., native tallied six birdies and is tied for the field lead with 27 pars. Wilson played a bogey free round in the afternoon session and tallied four birdies.

Sophomore Scott Stevens is T-15th at 1-under. The Chattanooga, Tenn., native, led Carolina in the opening round with a 3-under 68. He shot 73 (+2) in the second round. Stevens had five birdies on the day. He played a bogey free first round and was one of 13 players to record an eagle in the first 36 holes after he posted a two on the par 4 10th in the opening round.

Junior Keenan Huskey and sophomore Ryan Stachler are tied for 41st at 2-over. Huskey shot 73 (+2), 71 (E) and Stachler shot a paird of 72s (+1). The duo tied for the team lead with eight birdies each.

Sophomore Will Miles shot 3-over (74) to start the day, then came back with a 72 (+1) in the second round. Freshman Caleb Proveaux, who is playing as an individual, is T-69th at 7-over.

Kennesaw State is leading the team race at 11-under par. Florida State is second at 9-under and North Florida is third at 8-under. The Seminoles and Ospreys each shot a 18-hole tournament best 273 (-9) in the second round on Saturday. Josh Lee of Florida State is the 36-hole leader at 7-under after shooting 66, 69 in the first two rounds.

Round Changer Jamie Wilson

Wilson’s 67 in the second round was a new career 18-hole low. He’s tied for the field lead with 27 pars in 36 holes. He had just three bogeys on Saturday and played a bogey free second round with four birdies.

Quoting Coach Bill McDonald

“I saw some really good golf today from this team, but unfortunately we dropped six or seven shots on the last couple of holes. Jamie just keeps getting better and his play saved us. We are capable of playing and finishing our rounds much better and I expect our guys to be more focused for the final rounds tomorrow.”

Notable

South Carolina’s par-5 scoring average of 4.43 led the field at the end of day one. The Gamecocks shot 17-under as a team on the long holes Saturday.
Carolina is tied for the field lead with 116 pars.

It’ll be another shotgun start for the final round on Sunday at 8:30 a.m. ET. Carolina will be paired with North Carolina and Charlotte for the final 18 holes.
