Gamecock NCAA East Regional Qualifiers Announced

May 18, 2017

Meet Info

Date: May 25-27, 2017

Location: Lexington, Ky.

Venue: UK Outdoor Track & Field Complex

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The University of South Carolina officially began the road to the NCAA Championships on Thursday, as 2017 NCAA East Regional qualifiers were announced. Carolina will send 19 individual entries to the Regional, and three relay squads will represent the Gamecocks May 25-27 at the UK Outdoor Track & Field Complex in Lexington, Ky.

In order to qualify for the meet, student-athletes must rank inside of the region’s top-48 in an individual event or top-24 in a relay after scratches. Once in Lexington, the top-12 finishers in both individual and relay competitions will qualify for the NCAA Championships, to be held June 7-10 in Eugene, Ore.

Redshirt senior Tyler Brockington leads a group of eight Gamecocks who rank inside of the region’s top-10 heading into the meet. The nine-time All-American won the SEC Championship in the 400mH last week at Cregger Track with a region-best performance of 55.97.

Joining Brockington in the east’s top-10 on the women’s side are Rougui Sow (third, long jump), Natasha Dicks (fifth, triple jump) and Nakita Gray (seventh, high jump). Sow and Dicks each earned bronze medals in their event at the SEC Championships.

After finishing third at SECs in his primary event, Tye Williams is the top Gamecock qualifier on the men’s side, where he ranks second in the high jump. SEC silver medalist Josh Awotunde is listed fourth in the shot put, while Ncincilili Titi is ranked fourth in the 200m and SEC bronze medalist Isaiah Moore is ranked sixth in the 110mH.

Sow and Williams are two of the six Gamecocks that will compete individually at the NCAA East Regional meet for the first time in 2017. Men’s student-athletes Eric Favors (shot put), Yann Randrianasolo (long jump) and Armand Woodley (pole vault) will make their regional debut along with Alycia Springs (shot put) on the women’s squad.

QUOTING HEAD COACH Curtis Frye

“We’re looking forward to representing our university next week with another big group at the NCAA Regionals. After a really strong SEC Championships, our goals are to continue our success and send as many student-athletes as possible to the national meet. We have some very capable Gamecocks heading to Lexington, so I am excited to see what they can do.”
