COLUMBIA, S.C. – Former South Carolina women’s soccer standout Sophie Groff will be taking her talents to the professional level after signing with Keflavik FC of the Deild Women’s League in Iceland.
Groff will leave for Iceland and join the team later this week. Keflavik, which competes in the top of Division 2 in Iceland, currently sits in fourth place in the league standings with 12 points on three wins, three draws and one loss. The team’s four-month season will conclude in September.
“The opportunity came out of nowhere, but it’s an opportunity I couldn’t pass up,” Groff said. “I am excited to fulfill a dream I have had since I was a little girl.”
Groff, who wrapped up her time at Carolina this past fall, ranks fifth in program history with 24 career goals. Her 62 points and 10 game-winning tallies both sit as the sixth-best mark all-time among Gamecocks, and the Grapevine, Texas, native totaled a career-best nine goals as a senior en route to All-SEC Second Team honors. Groff netted four-game winners in her final year, including the decisive goal against No. 20 Colorado in the second round of last fall’s NCAA Tournament.
