Gamecocks Place 21st in Final Learfield Directors' Cup Standings

June 29, 2017 Buoyed by a national championship in women’s basketball and garnering points from 17 of its 20 eligible sports, the University of South Carolina finished the 2016-17 season ranked 21st in the final Learfield Directors’ Cup Standings, it was announced today.

The Gamecocks amassed a school-record 832.5 points, surpassing the previous high of 828.5, set in 2001-02. The 21st-place finish was the highest since the 2002-03 campaign and the third-highest finish in school history, behind only the number 11 ranking in 2001-02 and the number 18 finish in 2002-03.

“I want to congratulate all of our student-athletes, coaches and staff on the great Learfield Cup finish,” said Athletics Director Ray Tanner. “We compete for excellence in all of our sports and the Learfield Cup results are indicative of this success. I feel that we are in a good place to build on these results and reach a higher place next year.”

The Gamecocks placed seventh among the 14 schools in the SEC, with eight SEC schools placing among the top 25 schools in the country.

Carolina’s 832.5 points were accumulated based on the following finishes:

The Learfield Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution’s finish in up to 20 sports in Division I ââ’¬” 10 men’s and 10 women’s.

Stanford was the overall winner in the 2016-17 Learfield Director’s Cup Standings, followed by Ohio State, Florida, Southern California and North Carolina.
