Mahmoud Finishes Ninth at World Championships

BUDAPEST, Hungary – South Carolina senior Akram Mahmoud started strong at the 2017 FINA World Championships by finishing ninth in the 800-meter freestyle. Mahmoud competed Tuesday morning in Budapest, representing Egypt and recording a time of 7:51.41.
Mahmoud took fifth place in heat four of Tuesday’s competition. With his overall ninth-place finish, the senior Gamecock earned a position as the first alternate in Wednesday’s 800-meter freestyle finals.
The Cairo, Egypt, native will compete once more in the 1500-meter freestyle on Saturday, July 29. Also competing in the FINA World Championships is fellow senior Tomas Peribonio, representing Ecuador in the 200-meter and 400-meter individual medley on July 26 and 30, respectively.
