COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina women’s golfers Ana Pelaez and Marion Veysseyre are set to compete at the 2017 European Ladies’ Amateur Championship this week in Switzerland. The four-day event at the Golf Club Lausanne gets underway Wed., July 26.
This week’s tournament features 144 golfers who will compete in three rounds of stroke play before the field is cut to the top 60 and ties on Friday. The advancing golfers will play 18 more holes of stroke play on Sat., July 29, and the champion will be determined at the conclusion of the final round. This week will mark the second-straight appearance at the European Ladies’ Amateur for both Gamecocks.
Pelaez, a native of Malaga, Spain, helped lead the Spanish squad to a fourth-place finish at the European Team Championships (July 11-15) after advancing to match play at the Ladies’ British Open Amateur (June 12-17) earlier this summer. The rising sophomore turned in a historic freshman campaign this past season, posting the lowest stroke average (73.12) by a Gamecock newcomer. She notched her first collegiate win at the 2017 NCAA Columbus Regional and was tabbed an All-American Honorable Mention by Golfweek.
Veysseyre’s summer also featured appearances at the European Team Championships and the Ladies’ British Open Amateur. The Lachapelle-Auzac, France, native and Carolina rising junior totaled three top-20 showings as a sophomore. She earned her first career top-10 finish (T10) at the 2017 FSU Match-Up (Feb. 10-12) and tied for 14th at the 2017 Darius Rucker Intercollegiate. Veysseyre shot par or better eight times this past season, including an opening-round 72 (E) at the 2017 SEC Championship.
